Fran Drescher, ‘The Nanny’ alum and president of the SAG-AFTRA union, was all smiles on Jul. 13, 2023. The actress delivered a speech that same day announcing the historic SAG-AFTRA strike, the first industry-wide strike in four decades.
During the speech, Fran called “shame” upon the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for not reaching a “fair” deal with the union on a new three-year contract. “I went in in earnest, thinking that we would be able to avert a strike,” she said at the start of the speech on Jul. 13. “The gravity of this move is not lost on me, or our negotiating committee, or our board members who have voted unanimously to proceed with a strike.”
The union and its members have been in negations with the AMPTP for over four weeks and upon the organization not meeting their requests, Fran called on a strike which will affect the majority of Hollywood. “So we came together in strength, and solidarity, and unity, with the largest strike authorization vote in our union’s history, and we made the hard decision that we tell you, as we stand before you today. This is major. This is really serious,” she added. “You cannot change the business model as much as it has changed, and not expect the contract to change, too.”
As a result, many celebrities are on strike and have hit the streets in protest. See photos of the actors and stars here!
