Danai Gurira, born on February 14, 1978, is one of the fiercest actresses in Hollywood right now. The Zimbabwean-American actress and playwright had already made a mark in the theater industry before becoming a megastar. Her career hit new heights in 2012 when she was cast in the wildly popular TV series, The Walking Dead on AMC. In a role that demanded skill and poise, she portrayed the katana-wielding warrior Michonne until 2020, and then again in the show’s final 2022 season.
Not one to be confined to a single medium, Danai Gurira’s talents extend to the big screen as well. She breathed life into the Wakandan warrior, Okoye, in Marvel’s Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
But her success on the silver screen did not deter Danai from pursuing her passion for the small stage. Her decorated career as a playwright includes a 2016 Tony nomination for her Broadway play, Eclipsed.
